Autumn 2010 Director's Message![]() Changes Anecdotally and by direct observation, it seems weather around the globe has been extreme this summer. Does this support the theory of global warming? Time will tell, as we are simply observing weather, not climate. Through our own love of plants and gardening, each of us can help make the earth healthier. By planting trees and shrubs in our gardens or communities, reducing the size of our lawns and developing an appreciation for fields and meadows, and taking a more organic approach by using fewer chemicals, we can improve our local environment. Teach by example. Tower Hill staff does their utmost to be environmentally sensitive, by composting, recycling glass, metal, and paper, and by practicing integrated pest management in the gardens. By providing this example, we hope to make our constituents more aware of their own gardening habits. Cooler weather is fast approaching, and we will soon be awestruck by the beauty of autumn and the glories of nature. With autumn comes change: the two major changes at Tower Hill will be the Winter Garden, and the new display greenhouse, the Limonaia. These two garden displays, one indoor and one outdoor, will represent significant change at Tower Hill. These features will make the Garden an even more desirable destination for all of us winter-weary gardeners who cant travel to warmer climes. As construction for these new features wind down, we plan a Grand Opening at the Winter Open House on Sunday, November 14. In the meantime, be sensitive to all the changes around you and be aware of the positive change that good gardening can bring. Executive Director, John W. Trexler ![]() |
